Orkli Interrupted Thermocouples

A thermocouple is a thermoelectric device for measuring temperature, made of two different metals that produce a small electrical charge when heated on one side. This switches on an electromagnet which opens a valve, allowing the gas or water to flow through. When properly configured, thermocouples can provide temperature measurements over a wide range of temperatures.

An interrupted thermocouple is a thermocouple that runs via another safety device, such as overheat stat or TTB switch. Designed to be interrupted between the pilot light and the power pack at the back of the gas valve. These are usually interrupted by a high limit thermostat when activated, for example when a boiler overheats. This results in the electrical current through thermocouple being cut, stopping the magnetic field in power pack in the gas valve, thus closing the gas valve and preventing any gas passing through the pilot and main burner.
